Moving away from stubbed-toe blues and acoustic melancholia that his fans have come to expect, his fifth record draws more upon the experimental electronic influences of Radiohead and beat-driven, avant-garde melodies of Autolux.
From the delicate opener of ‘And No Ones Seen Him Since’, through to recent live staple ‘Made’ to the string-laden ‘All Mouth’, the album showcases Hayes’ ever-continuing growth as a solo writer and weaves together a wide range of influences and new cast of musicians with typical DIY skill. A busy year lies ahead with more full-band live dates, as well as those with Hayes’ other band Love Among The Mannequins, to be announced shortly, transforming Shoes And Socks Off into a noisy, sad-song project, with beats you can dance to.
